The way he disappears makes me think he was being slowly shot away. Why didn't Space Invaders sometimes have a formation that looked like a huge space invader?

Size limitations probably. The creator of Space Invaders originally made it 7KB but he stripped it down to 4KB to fit in the ATARI of the time

It slows to 5 FPS on my system - it draws 23000 rectangles per frame - runs well on my test webpage - I guess the scaling causes issues
