    I really just kind of stumbled on this effect. I started out trying to animate d/24361, but then I forgot to clear the screen with each loop execution, and I noticed shadows forming...

    ...and it turns out there's something about the way that X=1+S(m),Y=S(m*m--) do NOT function as pseudo-random formulas in this dweet. If you replace the X formula with X=2*Math.random() you just get noise....

    Maybe what's happening is that locally, the width and height formulas act like piecewise-continuous trigonometric functions. Hence the curvy-yet-segmented little shapes.
