for what it's worth, i was going for "reeds at the water's edge." not when i began, mind you...just at some point while i was experimenting, it started looking a little like that, and i coaxed it further in that direction :)

Yup, "reeds at the water's edge." is what I see too, I like how it seems to remain very abstract at the same time as being detailed and specific.

These are party flags of the June Festival, a traditional Brazilian celebration, artistically portrayed by the renowned Brazilian painter Alfredo Volpi. The pastel colors seen on these flags are typical of tissue paper due to its transparency. If you search for 'Alfredo Volpi' or 'bandeirinhas juninas', you will find the reference.

Small tweak after playing around more. The frequency of the mode color's appearance in a given frame is constrained + more of the color gamut is taken up by tertiary colors
