The way he disappears makes me think he was being slowly shot away. Why didn't Space Invaders sometimes have a formation that looked like a huge space invader?

Size limitations probably. The creator of Space Invaders originally made it 7KB but he stripped it down to 4KB to fit in the ATARI of the time
